James grew up in California and joined the Navy after high school, where he discovered tattooing fresh out of boot camp. After relocating to Maryland he worked at Capitol Tattoo in Silver Spring, Little Vinnie's in Baltimore, and Dragon Moon Tattoo Studio in Glen Burnie before moving to Washington D.C. He co-founded Bethesda Tattoo Company in 2005 with a focus on quality custom work.
